First It Was Disabled Veterans … Now It's The Red Cross?

Last week the New York State Attorney General’s Office won a $25 million settlement stemming from an investigation of fundraising abuses by the Disabled Veterans National Foundation and it’s direct mail vendors.
 
Now the same Attorney General’s Office is asking the American Red Cross to be honest about how it raised and spent nearly $300 million in donations after Superstorm Sandy. But the American Red Cross is saying they won’t because the information includes “internal proprietary methodology and procedures for fundraising, confidential information about its internal operations, and confidential financial information.”
 
This is very sad.  They are insulting everyone’s intelligence.  I’ve been to countless conferences and read piles of books about fundraising.  Can someone please tell me what on earth could be so proprietary and confidential that it would prohibit them from being open and transparent?
