If you don’t know where you are going, you will never get there.
Here’s how to start with the end in mind so you can be resolute in finding the best fitting job for you and your dreams.
First, dream.
Grab a pen and a blank sheet of paper, sit in a quiet room and write everything down about what you believe would be your perfect job.
Think about the mission you’d like to be involved in, the kinds of people you want surrounding you, the type of boss you want, the hours, the pay… everything. It’s just a piece of paper, so dream away! This will be your checklist/scorecard.
Second, score.
As you look at opportunities and go on interviews, make sure to look at your scorecard so you can remember what to look for and ask about during your visits.
Third, compare.
As soon as you leave an interview, pull out your checklist/scorecard and rate how each opportunity ranks for each of your desires. Tally up the scores and make your decision. Do everything you can to avoid settling for a job that is too far off base. Be patient. Be persistent. Then you’ll be happy.
