HOT OFF THE PRESS: A Golden Age of Philanthropy Still Beckons With a New $59 Trillion Target

thumbnailHere you can find a combination of two impressive new studies focusing on estimates of wealth transfer and philanthropic giving by households during the period from 2007 through 2061.
I find this fascinating because the authors (John J. Havens and Paul G. Schervish) have revised their previous estimate of $41 trillion upward to a whopping $59 trillion.

“Our current estimate of wealth transfer for the 2% growth scenario is $58.1 trillion in 2007 dollars for the 55-year period from 2007 through 2061 – 12% greater than our original estimate [$40.6 trillion]. This estimate assumes that estate taxes would revert to 2001 taxation levels with a $1 million exemption after 2012. If the estate taxes remain at the 2011 levels with a $5 million exemption after 2012 our estimate increases to $59.0 trillion.”

For purposes of philanthropy, It would be interesting to see a demographic comparison about the percentage of childless households in this era, compared with previous generations. I suspect it is much, much higher, which might make this the platinum era.

He! He! Don’t shoot the messenger.
It’s interesting that they revised the figures upward so much.
