Are You Just a Good Vampire?

VampireLast weekend I was at a party and someone asked me what I did for a living.
After briefly explaining our focus on major and legacy gifts, our donor tracking technology, and engagement fundraising philosophy, the person said, “Oh! So you’re really like a good vampire… you use your powers (special words and designs) to sort of hypnotize people into letting you suck their blood (money).”
“OUCH!” I thought to myself.
But then I started thinking she may be on to something. After all, there ARE good vampires like The Count (Sesame Street) and Bill Compton in HBO’s successful series True Blood.
Maybe I am just a good vampire. Here’s a fun list of vampire powers and how each relates to fundraising/marketing:

  1. Psychic powers – we aim to read the minds of our donors and supporters to help build partnerships that work for everyone
  2. Telekinisis – we aim to move matter (change the world) with the power of our thoughts
  3. Shape shifting (into a bat) – sometimes we have to change shapes (or be chameleons) in order to adapt to our environments and/or donors’ needs
  4. Ability to fly – from town to town and city to city… to meet with donors
  5. Ability to heal themselves and others – that’s at the core of what we’re doing, isn’t it?
  6. Enhanced strength, speed, and senses – sometimes if you want to survive a board meeting or event, you better have superpowers
  7. Immortality – the work we do today will have lasting effects and provide for others forever

What do you think? Are you just a good vampire?

I feel this is an ideal learning opportunity for the public. When these chats come up, I find it important to capitalize on that moment to change the stereotypical negative view of our industry. We don’t take, we allow others to give. We work with finesse as social entrepreneurs to ensure that good comes out of all the capital gains.
